Delivery and Takeaway Sales Reach Double Pre-covid Levels

Latest figures from CGA by NielsenIQ’s hospitality at Home Tracker shows managed restaurants groups’ delivery and takeaway sales ended 2022 at twice their pre-Covid level.



Why Is the Delivery and Takeaway Market So Strong?


The latest figures show combined delivery and take away sales were 104% higher in December 2022 than in December 2019, with deliveries up 238% and takeaway and click-and-collect orders 53% ahead. This means that nearly a quarter (24%) of total sales in December were from delivering takeaways!


Long-Term Shift in Consumer Behaviour


The findings confirm that the convenience customers experienced from using delivery platforms during lockdowns have had long-lasting effects on consumer behaviour. This has transformed the hospitality market, as takeaways and deliveries remain popular long after the Covid restrictions have ended.


Rise in At-Home Drinks Orders


The results from CGA also highlight the increasing importance of drinks, which now account for 10% of all at-home orders.

With delivery and takeaway sales reaching double pre-Covid levels, as customers continue to seek convenience, CGA director, Karl Chessell, comments: “After booming in 2020 and 2021, a return to eating out and a squeeze on consumer spending, both contributed to the plateauing of sales throughout 2022.

“Nevertheless, with nearly a quarter of all sales now coming from at-home orders, Covid has cemented food and drink deliveries in people's habits”.
