Will the taste for takeaways continue?

During lockdown it became easier for people to enjoy their favourite restaurant meals in the comfort of their own home, thanks to the relaxing of takeaway rules. Despite the reopening of the hospitality sector, it seems that the nation’s appetite for takeaways is set to continue!

Deliveroo, the food delivery app, more than doubled its number of customer orders in the first six months of this year, despite an end to lockdown restrictions and the reopening of restaurants, bars and hospitality venues.

It’s not just the number of orders that are increasing, people are also spending more! Prior to the pandemic, UK consumers were spending around £38 per month each on takeaways, home deliveries and meal kits, according to accountancy firm KPMG. This increased to £53 per person between spring 2020 and spring 2021.

Although the lifting of all restrictions in the hospitality sector has led to a surge in dining out, it’s clear that consumer habits have changed and that there will still be a place for regular takeaway treats.
